How to Self-Certify to ISO Standards
Self-certification can be appropriate under certain conditions — but it must follow internationally recognized practices, such as those found in ISO/IEC 17050 Parts 1 and 2.
What is ISO Self-Certification?
Self-certification is the act of declaring that your organization conforms to the requirements of an ISO standard — without engaging a third-party certification body. It relies on the Supplier’s Declaration of Conformity, as outlined in ISO/IEC 17050-1 (general requirements) and ISO/IEC 17050-2 (supporting documentation and structure).
How It Works
Your organization develops and implements an ISO-compliant system internally, conducts internal audits, and formally declares conformity through written documentation. This declaration may include process evidence, quality records, risk assessments, and internal reviews — all maintained in accordance with ISO/IEC 17050.
When Self-Certification is Used
Self-certification is most appropriate for:
- Internal quality systems
- Pre-certification implementation phases
- Informal compliance requirements with low third-party scrutiny
- Clients or partners who accept internal assurance over formal certification
However, it is not sufficient for regulated sectors, government contracting, or most global supply chains where third-party accredited certification is mandatory.
Benefits and Risks
Benefits:
- Internal quality systems
- Pre-certification implementation phases
- Informal compliance requirements with low third-party scrutiny Risks:
- Often not recognized by external regulators or contracting authorities
- May not satisfy customer requirements or RFQs
- Can lead to false confidence without expert guidance

Final Note
If you're considering self-certification, do it right. ISO/IEC 17050 provides the framework, but success still depends on objective evidence, structured implementation, and clear documentation. The standard can be purchased from multiple locations, but is always availalble in the most current editions here: Part 1 ISO/IEC 17050-1: 2004 Generalrequirements and here Part 2 ISO/IEC 17050-2: 2004 Supporting documentation .
